Management and Crew Members

 

Service Manager – David Burt:

An experienced manager whom has been in the Children’s Services sector for 16 years much of which was at a senior management level. David also managed Offending Behaviour Services. Interventions and development whilst working closely with the Youth Justice Board.

Having both worked for Local Authority, Private and within the Charity sector bringing experience gained from having worked across multi-site services. David has gained the following qualifications and studies – BSC (Hons) Health and Social Care, Diploma Health and Social Care, Cert Health and Social Care, Cert Managing Care, Cert Reflective and Evidence-Based Practice and Professional Cert Effective Practice (Criminal Justice). Working with children and young people in trouble and Foundations for Effective Practice in Youth Justice.

Brian Birchall – Crew Member (Deputy Manager)

Brian’s skills are uniquely ideal to promote our values by keeping children happy, safe, building resilience and maintaining positivity.

Brian has experience within the children’s care sector for over 18 years with over 14 years’ experience as a senior child care worker in a special school/home environment, three of which as a residential care manager. Brian is passionate about the outdoors and keeping fit. Further to this his interests include fitness, camping, kayaking, fishing, bush craft and all manner of outdoor pursuits. Brian has the NVQ level 4 registered managers award and NVQ level 3 Health and Social Care, and level 2 Train the Trainer in Safeguarding.

David Milligan – Crew Member (Senior)

Dave’s unique skills within the musical field allows young people to express themselves emotionally and creatively though the medium of music. This is ideal for building emotional literacy and appropriate means of emotional expression.

David is an experienced and qualified child care worker, he has worked in homes since 2004. He is a musician specialising in drums, keyboards and pianos. He has had the pleasure of touring the country with ‘The Original Bachelors’ as a freelance drummer. Further to this his orchestral experience includes leading the percussion section for the Merseyside Youth Orchestra at the Philharmonic Hall. Dave is qualified with NVQ level 3 Children and Young People.

Walter Lee – Crew Member (RCW)

Walters expertise within his field enables us to promote our values through exercise, healthy eating and expression of emotions via appropriate means thus leading to enhanced self-control of anger etc.

Walter has over 4 years’ experience as a child care worker as a shift leader, qualified to work with children and young people both within the single occupancy homes and multiple bedded. Walter is a qualified ABA boxing coach and served in the military police. Walter is also a passionate Warrington rugby league supporter. He often leads in fitness programmes and dovetails this with healthy eating. Walter is qualified with NVQ level 3 Children and Young People.

Claire Farrell – Crew Member (RCW)

Claire’s experience of working within groups and community projects has allowed us to build a wide bank of resources and activities that are tailored for both fun and educational outcomes. These can be targeted to lift their mood or to calm them down when they are highly stimulated. Claire’s skills within this area are key to the positive running of the boat and to the happiness of our children

After graduating from Plymouth University for studying Criminology and Criminology with International Affairs Claire has been a part of and lead on various voluntary groups working closely with community groups and youth projects. Claire is currently a treasurer for one such group and has been funded by both the National Lottery and the Wigan Crime Commissioner Fund. Her qualifications also include GNVQ Health and Social Care, Counselling and Health Improvement

Joanne Heaton – Crew Member (RCW)

Joanne’s love of the outdoors and all that it offers is evident in the range of activities in which she facilitates. Joanne also works hard to show that bad weather isn’t a reason or excuse to give up on activities, in fact some activities are designed and better when its not sunny. Joanne’s work is crucial to keeping our children happy and safe while getting them to participate and engage.

Joanne has worked within both residential care sector and within the community working across a wide spectrum of groups of vulnerable people. Joanne’s expertise as a host for the home included the healthy eating programme and the extensive activities programme. Her interest includes horse riding, sea fishing, hiking, nature, cooking, bush craft and boating, having much experience on narrow boats.

Maria-Theresa Miles– Crew Member (RCW)

The skills and persona of Maria-Theresa are vital when working with children as they can clearly see her positive role modelling and through this, their own potential. Maria-Theresa demonstrates to our children that the sky can be the limit and that ones goals are worth pursuing. Her tenacity and grit dovetails with our values and this is evidenced in our work.

Marie is qualified to Level 4 Cert Ed/PGCE and Multi-National Project Management (IBM).  She is also a newly qualified RYA Yacht Master and enjoys many interests including volunteering within the Sea Cadets, swimming, cycling, and power lifting. These skills were taken to the 2017 Invictus games in Chicago where she represented the UK para team in Swimming, Cycling, Field & Track and shooting thus gaining Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Other interests include making jams and chutneys from home grown produce, a skill which will be enjoyed on the boat and by our young people. From 2014 Marie was volunteering with veterans to identify assistance and support required to meet their physical, mental, financial and housing needs.

Andy Gregory – Crew Member (RCW)

Andy Gregory, a big name in rugby league who made a name for himself in 1981 playing for Widnes and beating Hull. Throughout his time playing rugby, Andy played unbeaten at Wembley no less than nine times. Andy uses his time appearing and often organising charity events up and down the country. His skills are evident within the work that we do with young people, his motivational skills are crucial to helping our young people to build aspirations, to be healthy and to participate.
